THE ASINABKA FILM AND MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL:

It's almost time for the 2nd Annual Asinabka Film and Media Arts Festival, (Celebrating Indigenous Arts in Algonquin Territory) which will take place in Ottawa from July 24-28, 2013.
The Asinabka Film and Media Arts Festival is a festival that aims to highlight works that examine Indigenous issues and topics that support media artists and filmmakers; to promote Indigenous cultures and languages; to educate people about First Nations, Metis and Inuit issues in Canada, and about Indigenous issues internationally and provide a space where Indigenous peoples can tell their own stories and see their own cultures reflected back at them; and to entertain and be innovative.
Currently in its second year of programming, the mandate of the Asinabka Festival is to establish an annual Indigenous film and media arts festival in our Nation's capital that allows independent artists-national, international, Indigenous, non-Indigenous to share, present and disseminate their work.
According to festival founder Howard Adler "the word "Asinabka" means "place of glare rock". The Asinabka area includes Victoria Island, and the Chaudiere Falls, which are both located between Ottawa and Gatineau on the Ottawa River, and the name Asinabka was chosen for this festival as an act of decolonization, and to reinforce that the Nations Capital is in the heart of the unsurrendered land of the Algonquins of the Ottawa River Valley. It was also chosen in solidarity with Elder William Commanda's visions for the Asinabka area.
